Calling AC/DC "Old Wave" isn't quite fair - they were as punky as the punks, almost - and almost pitched to the market as the most New Wave aligned of the hard rock groups. Them and Motorhead.

On the tangent of Motorhead and punk/new wave, Lemmy tried to teach Sid Vicious how to play bass. After three days, they both concluded that it was beyond him.
ReplyDeleteIn his memoirs, Lemmy said that the Damned were the true punk band. He said that the Pistols were "a great rock 'n' roll band, but really that's all they were" (surely in Lemmy's view of the world, that would be the highest of compliments?). And he said that the 101'ers were better than the Clash.
It's funny the idea of Lemmy teaching Sid Vicious as he was a highly unorthodox bassist and I would say actually fairly ineffectual - yet somehow it all added to the Motorhead blare-blast.
DeleteOne of my unwritten blogposts is about how Motorhead were distinctive - not despite but because Lemmy has barely any voice and he's not a very effective player of the bass. If he could sing like Ian Gillan and play like I dunno some really solid piledriving bassist, Motorhead would be a much more conventionally "powerful" group but one of thousands.
That reminds me of Silver Machine: Lemmy was the last choice to sing it, but it turned out Lemmy was the only one in the band who could hit the high notes (which browned off much of Hawkwind).
